 Rilke Promenade

Enjoyable walk dedicated to German author

This beautiful shore path has woods on one side and breathtaking views over the Sistiana Bay on the other. It is only a few kilometers long and an easy walk. It starts from the seasonal base of the Azienda di promozione turistica di Sistiana and ends at the entrance to the village of Duino. To get to this path from Trieste, take the number 44 bus (TT) or the number 51 bus (APT), which stops across the road from the head of the path. If you drive, then be aware that there is limited parking space—you might want to park further down the road.

Astonishing, and  easily attained views of the coast await. From the piazza ask directions for the coastal road, where before  Duino  there's an entrance through the trees to the Sentiero Rilke, a path named after the early twentieth-century German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who was the best-known walker of this cliff path.

Rainer Maria Rilke's great cycle of ten elegies named after the castle on the Adriatic had its inception, according to Rilke's host at Castle Duino, Maria von Thurn und Taxis-Hohenlohe, on the morning of January 21, 1912. Interrupted by the First World War, the cycle of ten elegies was completed only a decade later.
The two great complementary poem cycles, Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus, are not only the result of an extraordinary kind of contact with the unseen world; they are an attempt to understand that world, and to understand it in its holistic relationship to the visible.ble, world.

The Kugy path - Sentiero Kugy - Julius Kugy Wanderweg

The Kugy path Dedicated to the famous climber and writer, begins at Aurisina  and links the Vedette Belvedere "look-outs" situated along all the Carso ridge as far as Crogole : Alice, Slataper, Italia, Liburnia e Weiss.

Kugy was the poet of the Alps.

When walking in the lush vegetation, visitors can admire naturalistic environments of rare beauty, the sea, the city of Trieste and, in the distance, the tops of the Alps.

The Path Josef Ressel - Sentiero Ressel - Josef Ressel Wanderweg

The historical-naturalistic and high-tech path dedicated to Josef Ressel has been planned and realized by foresters in the Karst with the purpose of giving indipendence to people, particularly to the blind. It has been conceived in order to inform and make think, but mostly to touch and listen.

Carso at the beginning of the XX centuryThis walk is one of the first in Europe to be equipped with an infrared transmitters system that throughout the track allows, by a proper receiver, to have vocal information (in Italian, Slovenian or English) regarding the direction and the environmental and historical peculiarities of the territory as you walk across. The receiver can be collected at no charge at the "Centro didattico naturalistico" (Naturalistic educational centre), located at the entrance of the town of Basovizza, coming from Trieste, in via Gruden 34 or at the "Unione italiana ciechi of Trieste" (Italian union for blind of Trieste) located in via C. Battisti n. 2 (tel. 040 762046).

At the Naturalistic educational centre you can get from the personnel of the Forester Corps more information concerning the environmental realities of the Karst and other naturalistic topics even with the support of an interactive exhibition.

Josef Ressel, forest intendant and inventor, was born in Chrudim, Boemia in 1793. In the forest field he accomplished accurate studies on the condition of the woods, on the production of timber for the Austro-Hungarian Navy and planned reafforestation projects that anticipated the wide work of the Karst reafforestation. He's been also the author of ingenious experimentations in the naval field, as the propulsion through the screw of Archimedes and the steam navigation with propeller.

He lived in Trieste since 1821 and from that time on his life belonged to these multiethnic lands, this path is in fact the essence of his existence: a deep respect for nature and the mankind, without barriers or boundaries, always looking ahead for a technological and social future of the mankind in its whole.

Weiss Path - Sentiero Weiss - Weiss Wanderweg

The Weiss pathAn excursion itinerary around the village of Aurisina  characterised by historical, geological and botanical elements of great interest. The path is named after the great Trieste climber Tiziana Weiss.

Parco di Villa Revoltella - Stadtpark Baron Revoltella

Walking in a lovely park on the outskirts

A lovely park on the city's outskirts where you can take a walk and at the same time admire the lovely villa that belonged in the 19th century to Baron Pasquale Revoltella, a patron of art and culture. Like an alpine chalet and with its two floors, it was in this lovely building, which can no longer be visited, that the Baron spents his days relaxing.

In the garden between a lovely fountain and a basket ball pitch popular among young people, you can also find the stables and Revoltella's private chapel, dedicated to the holy Spaniard Pasquale Baylon and where the remains of the Baron still lay. Inside the church, there are several neo-gothic style features to be admired.  Bus # 11

Sentiero dei pescatori / Fisherman's Path / Fischerweg
Beautiful walk from Carso to the sea

This path that links the village of Aurisina with the beautiful beach of Cannovella de' Zoppoli was reopened a couple of years ago by the local Duino-Aurisina council. If you want to see something even more beautiful than the Rilke path then come here. However, be warned that although this is not a technically difficult walk, it is not suitable for people who become short of breath as it is a long and steep walk. Once you have reached the bottom you eventually have to ascend and this could be a problem for people with asthma. This walk follows the asphalt road to Aurisina for some way, and then turns off at a fork in the road just after a petrol station. Leave the road here and follow the signposted path towards a loose earth track which leads to a crossroads of three paths.  The Sentiero dei pescatori leads down from here towards the sea and crosses the railway platforms that link Udine with Trieste (obviously be careful when you cross the track). After the station, the descent continues in the midst of lots of vegetation and has a beautiful view over the Istrian coast to the Grado lagoon. Cross over the coast road and you will eventually arrive at the little Cannovella de' Zoppoli beach after passing through lots of narrow terraces and grapevines. There are lots of steps, but the sunset over the sea will make your effort seem worth it. There is also a small restaurant where you can refuel with a plate of spaghetti and clams, or fried squid, before climbing all the way back up again. For further information contact the Duino-Aurisina Council's Public Relations Office on the number provided (between 1pm-5pm Mon, 10am-1:30pm Tue-Fri).

Riselche Path - Sentiero di Riselche - Riselcherweg

A path rich in historical, archeological and especially natural attractions in the area around the village of Sgonico . It is named after the dolina it leads to and is provided with several information points and direction signs that help tourists along the way. On crossing the centre of Sgonico  on your way back, stop at the local renovated wine-cellar with its wide selection of local wines.

Strada Napoleonica - Napoleonweg
A lovely walk on the Carso

Another interesting itinerary begins in the center of Trieste from the central square Piazza Oberdan with the famous and beloved tramway Tram de Opcina, by electric traction on the entire line, supplemented by a cable section (the only one of its kind) to help to overcome the huge difference in height to reach the village of Optschenegg/Villa Opicina on the Carso plateau, 348 m above sea level.

After more than a century of active service it can still offer wonderful emotions to the local residents (it's still their preferred way to reach Opicina) and the tourists also find this original means of transportation (a cross between an extra urban tram and a cable railway) an unforgettable moment of their visit of Trieste. The tram car bearing no. 411 is the oldest tram still running in Europe today. Along the way you'll enjoy a particular view over the city. When you arrive to Villa Opicina we suggest a pleasant stroll on the Napoleonica road, a path in the woods between high limestone rocks that leads from Opicina to the village of Prosek (Prosecco). The open view ranges all over the Gulf of Trieste and a vast part of the city.
Being exposed to the sun and protected from the wind, it's a very pleasant itinerary even in the cold winter days.
To reach the beginning of the path, you have return back from the station of the tramway at Opicina, following the tracks till you see a great white obelisco, a monument erected in 1830 in memory of the emperor of Austria, that ordered the building of the commercial road that connected the port of the Empire to the capital of Austria. The path is quite leveled and continues for about 3 kilometers. It ends near some high limestone rocks, a good place to practice free climbing and bouldering. The "Napoleonic" Panoramic Pedestrian Route
The walk continues on the asphalted road till you reach a small fountain, and right behind it the path continues with a sign number 12 (follow the red and white signs on the trees and on the rocks) leading to the strange church named Tempio Mariano del Monte Grisa (see the panorama on the photo).
From here you can continue your walk following the signs that will lead you again to the Obelisco monument.

By car from Trieste you have the direction to Opicina, doing the Strada Nuova per Opicina or via Commerciale, then at the beginning of the village there is the starting point of this panoramic path (Obelisco).

We reccomend to take the tram leaving from Piazza Oberdan in downtown of Trieste, which is going till the village of Opicina, for the panorama offered and the particularity of this line.

It is an easy-doing itinerary where you don't need trekking clothes,  which goes from the starting point to the Monte Grisa Sanctuary, dominating the gulf of Trieste; in clear days you can observe the city, the sea front of Istria and the lagoon of Grado. It can be done by mountain bike too; for climber, good faces for training.

It is known as the Napoleonic street because, according to legend, it was built by Napoleon's troops. The road winds through 5 km of the Carsian high plain to the villages of Opicina and Prosecco. This walk is well loved by the people of Trieste, and especially popular on Sundays in the spring and autumn. People also come here to run and climb on the rocky outcrops which are on either side of the path.

When you are at Opicina, before beginning the walk, have a look towards the sky and admire the white obelisk which was erected by Trieste's Merchant Corp in 1830 in honour of the visit of the Austrian emperor Francis I.  As you set off, the path is very easy to follow (in spite of the fact that it was originally a medieval track which made its way though an oak wood. The wood has now disappeared.) and the distance in altitude between Opicina and Prosecco is only around 100 metres. It's a perfect way to spend a morning immersed in nature, surrounded by red sumac, sage and other beautiful countryside with wonderful views over the sea.
The area was put into order by the Giulian Alpine society and dedicated to the climber Nicolo Cobolli in 1935. It is sheltered from the bora and is often bathed in the sun making it a sunny island in the winter months. After you have walked leisurely for around an hour you will get near to San Nazario which is a typical village of Carso. You can go from here to the charming sanctuary at Monte Grisa.

Via della Salvia - Salbeiweg

Duino Aurisina - Trieste

An island of peace, immersed in nature. This is the Via della Salvia, an enchanting pathway in the middle of the woods, between Duino Aurisina and the land of Santa Croce, in the heart of the Trieste Carso.

There are plenty of alternative routes, you can walk along the road that overlooks the sea or for more sporty types, you can head towards the llokout dedixated to the climber Tiziana Weiss crossing the Carsican clearings and moors. In reality the whole journey is pleasant and can be completed in half a day. Panoramas such as this one fill the eyes and warm the heart. Spring and autumn are the best times to go or on a summer evening.

To get here take the coastal road that leads to Trieste until you reach a fork with a slope towards the sea on one side and a very steep asphalt road on the other. Take the latter and you will find yourself at the entrance to Via della Salvia. Park up in the neighboring area, fill your lungs with fresh air and off you go.

Val Rosandra - Rosandertal

Bagnoli presso Trieste

People living outside the Trieste area may not recognise the name. The locals, and the better informed, know that Rosandra is the name of a brook that runs through a natural reserve, the only stream flowing on the surface of the Karst. This corner of the Karst is also the highest: with its 670 mts, Monte Cocusso is the loftiest mountain in the area.Due to its windiness and peculiar orographical features, Val Rosandra presents an astounding variety of plants and flowers. The local fauna is also rather interesting: the woods are home to many rare species of birds and reptiles, while various types of amphibians populate the areas surrounding the stream. The pools are teeming with river crayfish; fishing is, however, strictly forbidden.

The valley is surrounded by sometimes gloomy mountainsides. It is negotiable from many sides, but we suggest you take one of the easiest and least tiring. The starting point is the small village of S.Elia (Draga): take the tarmac road and follow it into the bush, where the smell of soil and wet wood is overwhelming, especially after a storm. The path goes very gently uphill, and after the first twenty minutes it starts to go downhill.

By now you will have left the woods, the trees do not block out the view any longer and you will be able to take in the green-grey landscape. In about forty-five minutes you will reach the bar that used to serve the delectable and cheap moscatella, a refreshing beverage that could also be served to children, due to its very low alcoholic content. Outside what used to be the bar, there are wooden tables and benches for hikers to sit on and have a rest, and possibly puff on a cigarette, in total disregard of the healthy purpose of the walk.

The road back will take you to the opposite side of the valley, where the path rises a little higher and you may also take the opportunity to visit the small church of Santa Maria in Siaris, dating back to the fourteenth century. From there you may hurtle down the screes, or alternatively keep following the road, and still have a look at the screes without having to negotiate them.
The site is also important from an archeological point of view. here you will find the ruins of the ancient Roman aqueduct, dating back to the 1st century AD, which used to convey water from the Oppia spring to the ancient Tergeste. Back in Draga S. Elia, our starting point, you will also be able to see the old jazere, once employed in the production and preservation of ice.

So, You cannot leave Trieste without having visited the Rosandra Valley.

Actually it resembles to a canyon more than to a valley, carved in limestone by the Rosandra torrent, due to the presence of an edge between the sandstone and the limestone, it has a rich flora, with rare and endemic species.
The itinerary begins at the village of Bagnoli della Rosandra. It can be easily reached by bus, lines 40 or 41 or by car (about 10 km from the city center), tracking the road signs to San Dorligo della Valle. From the main square of   Bagnoli, following the asphalted road (closed to traffic in the weekends) you'll reach the alpine shelter "Mario Premuda", probably the shelter at the lowest altitude in Italy (80m). It was built by the pioneers of free climbing in 1940,  to serve as a base for the excursions in the Valley, today it serves as a good point of restoration for tourists and the triestini that are searching some refreshment in the hot summer evenings.
The Valley it's a natural gym for free-climbing, more than 100 routes of different technical difficulty, up to the rating of 7, some already opened at the beginning of the century by the famous climber Emilio Comici.
In the torrent, that formed some curious pools, eroding the limestone rock in the centuries, it is possible to go bathing in summer.

The local East-NorthEast wind , when channeled through the Valley, reaches a considerable speed. On the Sella della Bora (in the photo), the particular form of the rock works as a lunching pad, as the compressed wind expands again on the upper edge with no obstacles. In the days of strong Bora the wind reaches at this point speeds of more than 200 km/h, it's impossible to stand, it's quite an experience to try, but be careful, you could see the stones fly!
Near the shelter of Premuda you would notice the ruins of the antique roman aqueduct that brought the water to the city of Tergeste (the old roman name for Trieste), following a track about 17 km long and with the only help of a minimum difference in height (one of the many architectural miracles of the Antique Romans).

Following the main path named Path of Friendship as it continues over the border in Slovenia, you'll reach the water-fall of the torrent, a beautiful leap of more than 30 meters, for those non very experienced we suggest to watch the waterfall from the distance, on the path, as descending to the bottom of the fall could be quite dangerous.

For those more reckless it's possible to continue to the Cippo Comici, a monument dedicated to Emilio Comici and the mythical group of climbers called i "Bruti della Val Rosandra", a famous group of the heroic alpinism, the first explorers of the modern freeclimbing techniques, that moved their first steps in the natural gym of the Val Rosandra.Walking ahead on the main path you'll reach the small village of Botazzo, not more than 10 houses. From here you can continue on the left, on the road that leads to the old railway tracks that in the old days linked Trieste to the village of Hrpelje, now transformed in a bicycle track that descends from the Val Rosandra to the district of Campo Marzio in Trieste. When you'll pass a house that once was a small train station you'll encounter two tunnels, then, after no more than 500 meters you can choose a small path on the left (path n.15), be careful, it's a little hidden in the bushes.
This path leads to an open space with great trees where once stood the castle of Moccò that dominated the valley. The near belvedere is well worth a short walk, as the view embraces the whole valley and the upper part of the village of Bagnoli, where we started our excursion. From there you can descend directly to the Rifugio Premuda.
